LABOUR WELCOMES LAUNCH OF TENANTS DEPOSIT PROTECTION SCHEMES

Local Labour politicians have welcomed the launch of tenancy deposit schemes in Scotland, after many years of campaigning by Scottish Labour.

There are three schemes now operating, run by SafeDeposits Scotland, the Letting Protection Service Scotland and MyDeposits Scotland, following the introduction of new regulations last year

Such schemes, which protect tenants’ deposits from unscrupulous landlords trying to hold deposits unfairly, have been in operation in England and Wales for a number of years. Previously in Scotland tenants had to take legal action to try to recover deposit money but the regulations give them access to an independent dispute resolution service if the return of a deposit cannot be agreed.

Dumfriesshire MSP Elaine Murray said:

“Labour MSPs have long campaigned for tenancy deposit schemes and I am pleased they have finally launched in Scotland. Too many tenants find themselves unjustly out of pocket when moving flat.  An increasing number of people are in private lets and I have heard some horror stories of landlords withholding deposits or making unfair deductions. While the majority of landlords are honourable, this legislation will tackle those who try to take advantage of tenants. It will also help good landlords by giving them a recognised way to resolve a dispute.”

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown added:

“During these tough times the very last thing people need is an unscrupulous landlord trying to hold on to their deposit unfairly. Tenancy deposit schemes have proven successful in England and I welcome the extra protection they will provide to tenants in Dumfries and Galloway.”
