LOCAL MP SEEKS CLAMP DOWN ON OFF-GRID PRICE HIKES

Local MP Russell Brown is set to discuss the price of off-grid energy, such as heating oil and LPG, with the Office of Fair Trading later today (Wednesday).

The cold winter of 2010/11 saw the price of off-grid energy soar, as people struggled to heat their homes.

Ahead of the meeting with the OFT, Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown said:

“The astronomical price hikes in heating oil and LPG during the winter of 2010/11 caused misery for people right across our region. It is frankly unacceptable for people to have to nervously look at their oil and gas tanks and worry about being able to afford to keep them filled up.

“I asked the Office of Fair Trading to look into this issue but so far they haven’t done enough. They published a pretty toothless report that won’t do anything to stop a repeat of the soaring prices in the future.

“I will be looking for an update from the OFT on what progress, if any, they have made and I will be putting pressure on them for action. I am clear that we need to clamp down on these high prices before next winter.”
